Breast Reconstruction: The Peg Procedure

Peg Procedure

Created by Dr. Edward Knowlton, information about the peg procedure was published as the lead article in the September, 1992 issue of Contemporary Surgery. In 1994, the peg procedures were presented at the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons' annual meeting in San Diego.

This surgery allows surgeons to hide a mastectomy scar within the natural anatomical contours of the breast. The breast can then be reconstructed using the body's own tissue or with a saline breast implant.

The peg procedures are not suitable for all women considering breast reconstruction.
