Hi. I have an N2N of 38, live near Denver, and have had 2 surgeons swear that I need an FNG, because the breasts are so thin, atrophied, and that the pedicle will be so long that the nipple will die. They would only remove 400 grams in each case, and quite a bit of that would be skin. Since that is below the insurance requirement, the surgeon is having to beg for coverage,so it may not happen. On the other side, there's a surgeon who trained with Stevens (of the Laser Bra) in the area, who alos thinks an FNG is the way to go. On the 3rd side, a board certified center in Costa Rica swears he can do an inferior pedicle teachnique, thus saving the nipple. I have 3 questions. 1. Does an FNG generally leave you with some breast sensation, or none overall? 2. Is any of this erogenous? I know the new blood supply will/may eventually return feeling to the nipple but that it will not be sensuous. What about the rest of the breast? 3. What is the recovery time? The surgeon here didn't even mention loss of color in the nipple. If I can definitely get some erogenous feeling in the breast somewhere, then an FNG, especially when covered by insurance, given the expense of the self pay version, is an acceptable trade off for loss of nipple sensuality. Or are there common post surgery effects (sloughing etc) that should make me less prepared to settle? Thanks, Carolyn1 |

Hi Carolyn, I had a N2N of 38 1/2 cm. on my R side & 36 cm. on my L side. I did not have a FNG. Your breast description sounds a lot like mine. I had more skin removed than anything with my BR. My breast tissue was pretty much all at the end of my breasts. FNG generally leaves you with little or no sensation to your nipples as the nipple is removed & repositioned higher up onto the breast. The rest of the breast may have areas of numbness to it too. This is not uncommon, for many women, the numbness may resolve over time. Your breast tissue may look like it's sloughing, (like when you have a sunburn & the skin peels). Some women have developed blistering & scabs on the aerola & nippples that may slough off & reveal fresh skin underneath the scab. With any surgery, there is the chance of tissue death. The recovery time should be at least 3 weeks or more, depending on what type of work you do for living. Lifting should be avoided for several to prevent potential tissue death & healing complications. If you have small children around, you will need someone to help you out with their care too. Have you considered seeing more PS in your area for consults? Please consider more consults before making a decision. Add on note: Carolyn please be sure to visit the FNG board & also the Nipple & areola recontruction boards available here on BreastHealthOnline. This may help answer some more questions for you.
