Hi all.....it has been a while since my last post, but I am about at the end of my rope. I had a BR on 5-22-02 and had some pretty bad keloids on most of my smiley scar and somewhat less severe keloids around my areolas. PS tried injecting the scars with steroids, massage, Mederma, Silicone sheeting, etc. You get the picture, WE TRIED EVERYTHING!!!! Insurance approved a revision which I had done on 10-22-03. I had high hopes for the revision, but I think my smileys are going hypertrophic again. Any suggestions? Also, has anyone heard of using Aldara (for genital warts) on keloids or hypertrophic scars? My aunt is a nurse practitioner in a private OB/GYN office in Columbus, Ohio and she told me some of the docs at their office are trying it for scars. She says it works because it triggers the body's natural immune system to kick in and defend against the scars. Anyone heard of this before? I have an appt with my PS on December 8th and I'm going to ask him too, but I wanted the BHO voice(s) of reason also. Thanks for any replies, I'm really upset because I have lived with the pain of these scars for so long now that I feel like I'm never going to be "normal" again. Tara |

Hello Tara, Welcome to the Reconstruction and Revision Board! I'm sorry your scars are giving you trouble. All of my scars went hypertrophic after my BR and I know how painful and itchy they can be. If you haven't read our Hypertrophic Scars and Keloids page I would recommend it. Are you still using the silicone sheeting? I have seen women have success with the sheeting and hypertrophic scarring. I have one tiny area on my areola that is a little thick and massage has really helped that area. I researched Aldara and the only thing I could find is a clinical trial using Aldara on basal cell carcinomas. I would be interested in what your PS has to say about trying Aldara for your scars, so please let us know how your appointment goes. I hope that you can find something that will work for you, Tara.

Tara I'm so sorry that your scars seem to be going Keloid again I also haven't heard anything about using Aldara for this purpose, but I'm interested to see what your PS says about it. I really hope that you are able to figure something out in order to treat your scars. I can understand why you'd be really upset. *HUGS* to you and here's wishing your appt goes well next Monday!

Thanks for your replies ladies, I am pretty disappointed that I seem to be having this problem again. I had such hope that this would solve the problem, and now I think it's happening again. I have been so careful not to over-do or stretch the incisions just in case that had anything to do with it. I'm hopeful about the Aldara thing, and I'll let you know about what my PS says. I haven't started any kind of treatment for it this time as I'm only about 5 weeks post op and I just recently lost the last external knot of my dissolvable stitches. I plan to ask my PS what we can do when I see him Dec 8th. Thanks again, it's good to know that others understand the chronic pain and frustration these scars can cause. Tara |

Tara I think it really just stinks when you do everything right, and you're oh so careful, and yet the incisions still get screwy. Keep us updated about your appt with your -- |

Hi Tara. I feel ya sis. I have big hyper. scars under my breasts that pinch and feel streched all the time. I am learning to live with them as I have made the decision not to undrgo any more surgery (for now). I wish you luck and also wanted to tell you, in an area where the scars were'nt so bad, they seem to be flattning out. I hope yours will. Where is your Aunt Working? She is in my neck of the woods!! Tara, I'm so sorry you are having more trouble with scarring. You might take a look at this post. I don't know if this might help with your problems or not but it might be worth a try. Good luck and keep us posted on what you decide to do and the results.

Hey. I had a horrible keloid scar and the doctor cut it out and then I began treatment with Aldara. The scar did NOT keloid up again. The only thing is that your scar will look a LOT worse before it looks better. The Aldara causes the area to scab up and look really bad, (but that is indication that it is working). Anyways, you go through about 8 weeks of using the Aldara. I had to go to several doctors before one would treat me with something other than the usual cortisone shots, silicone sheeting, and Cordran tape. it is worth a try on doing the Aldara if you haven't already. | Hello Sandra. I do not know if you still post on this board, I hope you do. Could you please give me more details on how you used aldara on your scar? Did you use it right away or did you wait a few weeks before applying the cream? Did you cover up the wound with anything else besides the cream? Please help. |

Hello pardee, You are replying to a very old post, and most likely will not receive and answer. You really should call I wish you the best and hope that this treatment works for you. Hugs, EVE

Hey Pardee, I hope you're still around to read this. I just went to my post-op earlier this morning and was recommended the Aldara treatment. My doctor told me that she would "shave down" my keloid scar and that I would start applying the cream that very night. Some further probing and research by way of google searches confirmed the effectiveness of immediate treatment upon surgery in some informal trials. Also, every message board I've stumbled across which mentioned Aldara in relation to keloid treatment has been positive. However, I don't know if there is supposed to be an additional dressing for the wound in addition to the cream... I suspect that a visit to the clinic or something would best enlighten you. I'm personally planning on purchasing some pressure earrings from Delasco, to use after I'm mostly healed up from the surgery. I hear good things about them. Hopefully I've been able to help at least a bit! Best wishes and good luck in your searching. |

| Hi Somna, thanks for your reply. I do not keloid, but I do get hypertrophic scaring, so I am always interested in preventative methods. |

| Hi! I see that it's been several years since you first posted. I was wondering how your scars are now . . . ? I have the full range of scars. Around the aureole, and anchor. I feel like Franken-tits. I hope yours are fading and not as raised. I'd like to believe that mine will go away too. What did you wind up using to reduce them? |
