The American Society of Plastic Surgeons When considering a plastic surgeon for yourself, it's imperative that the doctor be a board-certified plastic surgeon. By choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon, you can be sure that the doctor has graduated from an accredited medical school and completed five to seven years of residency, usually three years in general surgery and two years in plastic surgery. You can visit the American Society of Plastic Surgeons Website for information on a wide variety of plastic surgeries. They also offer a board-certified plastic surgeon referral service at this website. The Plastic Surgeon Referral Service is a free offering provided by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). All of the surgeons listed through this service are ASPS members who are board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and/or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. At BreastHealthOnline we strongly suggest you visit our Members' Plastic Surgeons board, and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons website to help yourself find the best possible plastic surgeon for you. Also note, not all plastic surgeons are alike - even if they are board certified. You really need to arm yourself with a good list of questions and all the information you can going in to evaluate each doctor you see for yourself. Look for the Logo The ASPS logo shows you are in the hands of a physician certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Please be careful when selecting a plastic surgeon, and never let a plastic surgeon who is not Board-Certified in plastic surgery do your surgery. Any doctor can take a weekend seminar on plastic surgery and call himself a plastic surgeon. Only if your plastic surgeon is a Board-Certified plastic surgeon is he qualified to do your surgery. This denotes that he's had extensive training and testing in the field of plastic surgeries. Besides this, though, make sure that your Board-Certified plastic surgeon is well versed in the procedure for which you are seeking. Typically, the more breast reduction or breast reconstruction surgery a surgeon does per week, the more experienced and qualified he or she will be. When looking for breast reduction you want a surgeon who is very skilled at it. It is our opinion that the most skilled surgeons are doing 3-5 breast reductions or reconstructions a week. By taking the time to find a qualified surgeon you will reduce your risk of complications, and if God forbid anything were to go wrong, a highly-qualified surgeon is much more likely to care about your outcome and help you through it, not just blow you off and leave you in the lurch. We counsel patients every day who did not do their homework on their surgeons, and how they wish they'd taken the time to be certain they had the right surgeon. Please don't let this be you.
