Topic Pain and some swelling after mammogram (5692 hits) Previous Next Up

By Angelao On 09/20/07 07:31 pm
Hi I'm new and very worried.  I am 41 and had my first mammogram(baseline) 3 weeks ago, the day after I started my period, I got a call back from my Dr. telling me that I needed additional imaging done, he said everything looked fine they just want to make sure. I went back yesterday 9/19. They took additional images of my Left breast only, I was told that there was some dense area in the outside of that breast. Today, my breast hurt and I have some swelling which I never had before. I have what feels like a knot just left and lateral to the nipple. My results will be ready tomorrow and I will be able to find out what they are, but until then I am worried sick.  I am married and a mother of 5, frankly I don't know what I would do if something was wrong, I guess I would figure it out like everything else.

Welocme to BreastHealthOnline!  We're happy to have you here.  I'm sorry your first mammogram was scary for you and you had to go back for additional images.  I want you to know that this happens a lot so try not to worry too much.  I know that is much easier said than done.  The radiologist are just making sure everything is okay.  I hope you were able to get your results today and everything was fine.  I also hope that you told the doctor or nurse that called you about your breast being swollen and the lump you feel.  Wishing you all the best!

Hello Angelao,

Did you get your test results yet?  The wait for mammogram tests can be very stressful, so I hope you do not have to wait long. I also hope that you did not get any kind of bad news.

Most of the time, the extra testing does not turn up any problems. Like Sharon said, it is done so that the doctors can get a more clear picture of the internal breast tissue, so it is a necessary thing to keep you healthy, and lets the doctors know exactly what is happening. The percentages of anything turning up is very low, so have faith, think positive, and wait to see what the news is. A regular mammogram is still the best way to be pro-active in our breast health. Try not to let this first unpleasant experience keep you from having important regular mammograms.

If you have soreness in your breast, some Tylenol might help.  It may be related to your time of the month, when you can have some internal soreness that is just natural for your body. If you still feel this pain, do not hesitate to phone your doctor and ask about it.

Another thing that you may want to do is the Breast Self Exam each month.  You can find a great interactive video here, Breast Self Exam. This along with mammogram and yearly doctor visits is a good schedule for keeping you worry free concerning your breasts.

I hope all goes well for you,  EVE
